Roads in Serbia and planning a car trip
What to know about roads, navigation and seasonal limits so your trip around Serbia goes smoothly.
Motorways and ordinary roads
The country's main axis is the A1 motorway (E-75) through Belgrade: from the Hungarian border through Novi Sad and Belgrade south to Niš and on to the border with North Macedonia. Motorways usually have a good surface and markings, but many sections are tolled.
Between small towns and in the mountains the surface and width of roads vary, so allow more time than your navigation shows.
Navigation
Use Google Maps or Waze and download an offline map of the area in case the signal is weak in the mountains. Serbian networks cover most roads, but in remote areas the signal drops.
Toll sections and speed
The toll is taken at toll points: in cash, by card or with a TAG. Speed limits and rules are described in a separate article. You will meet fixed and mobile speed cameras, so watch the signs. More: tolls and driving rules, parking in Belgrade.
Mountains and winter
Roads to Kopaonik, Zlatibor, Tara and other mountain areas need winter equipment in winter, and in snow and ice you need care and extra time. In winter the fog in Vojvodina can be very thick, so do not hurry and keep your distance. A crossover suits the mountains.
Where to go
From Belgrade it is easy to drive to Novi Sad and Fruška Gora, to the Iron Gates on the Danube, to the monasteries of central Serbia, to Tara, Uvac and Zlatibor. Ready-made routes with stops and a map are in the “Routes” section. Open the routes.
