Parking in Belgrade in a rental car

A short guide to the zones, payment and the mistakes that earn fines in central Belgrade. Rates change, so check the signs on the street.

Paid zones in the centre

Parking in the centre of Belgrade is split into colour-coded zones with a time limit: red (the most central, up to 1 hour), yellow (up to 2 hours) and green (up to 3 hours). You can tell the zone from the road signs and the colour of the markings.

Outside the paid zones, street parking is usually free, but the rules on the signs always matter more than general advice.

How to pay

The easiest way is an SMS with your licence plate (no spaces or hyphens) to the zone number. According to city services these are 9111 for red, 9112 for yellow and 9113 for green. SMS payment is usually built for Serbian numbers, so it may not work with a foreign SIM card: in that case buy a ticket from a machine or a parking attendant.

You can also buy a paper or electronic ticket at a kiosk, a ticket machine or from an attendant. Keep the payment confirmation until you leave.

When you do not need to pay

Paid parking usually applies on weekdays from morning to evening and on Saturdays until mid-afternoon. On Sundays and public holidays street parking is, as a rule, free. Check the exact hours on the signs in the zone.

If you do not want to look for a space

Use paid car parks and garages in the centre: they cost more but are more reliable. Ask your hotel whether it has parking and mention it when you book the car. Pick a small car for the city: compact cars.

Fines and towing

Parking is enforced and violations are recorded. A fine can come through the rental company and be taken from your deposit. Do not park on crossings, at stops or on pavements, and keep your payment confirmation. General rules: tolls and driving rules.

Pick a car

Choose the city and dates: the price has no hidden fees. The contract is signed directly with the rental company.
