Tolls and driving rules in Serbia
In short, what a driver of a rental car should know. The data is indicative: check the current rules on the official websites.
Toll roads
Most motorways in Serbia are tolled. The toll is collected at toll points: in cash, by bank card or with an electronic TAG device (the ENP system) of the operator Putevi Srbije (putevi-srbije.rs). Ask the rental company whether the car has a TAG. Roads and routes: roads and trip planning.
How to pay at the toll point
Cash and bank cards are accepted. Cards issued by Russian banks, as a rule, do not work abroad, so keep cash in dinars and a card from a foreign bank. On petrol stations: fuel in Serbia.
Speed limits
Unless signs say otherwise: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h on ordinary roads, 100 km/h on expressways and 130 km/h on motorways. Watch the signs: on some sections the limit is lower.
Lights and phone
Dipped headlights must be on all year round, including during the day. You may use a phone while driving only hands-free.
Alcohol
The permitted blood alcohol level is very low (about 0.02%). The safest approach is not to drink at all if you are driving.
Winter tyres
Winter equipment requirements apply from 1 November to 1 April. If you rent in winter, ask the rental company how the car is equipped.
Fines
Violations are recorded, and a fine may be passed on through the rental company and taken from your deposit. Follow the rules and park only where it is allowed. On parking in Belgrade: parking and fines.
Pick a car
Choose the city and dates: the price has no hidden fees. The contract is signed directly with the rental company.
