Rental car insurance in Serbia
In plain words: what the insurance covers, what an excess is and how to avoid losing your deposit.
What is usually included
The rental usually includes compulsory third-party liability insurance, which covers damage to other road users. Damage to the rental car itself is covered by CDW or similar with an excess: the amount you pay.
Excess and deposit
The excess is the maximum amount you pay if the car is damaged. The deposit is blocked as a guarantee and is usually close to the size of the excess. How to leave a deposit: payment and deposit.
Full coverage
You can buy extra insurance with a zero or lower excess. The price depends on the company, and such insurance often reduces or removes the deposit.
What is often not covered
As a rule, exclusions: tyres and glass, the underbody, the interior, lost keys and documents, wrong fuel, and damage caused by breaking the contract (crossing a border without permission, alcohol, off-road driving). See the contract for the exact list.
Cross-border travel
Trips to neighbouring countries need a separate document (the green card) and the company's permission. Without them the insurance may not apply. More: cross-border travel.
What to do after an accident
Call 112 (police 192), tell the rental company, photograph the scene, get a report and do not sign unfamiliar papers without a translation. What to check at pick-up to avoid disputes: the checklist.
Pick a car
Choose the city and dates: the price has no hidden fees. The contract is signed directly with the rental company.
Frequently asked questions
What is CDW?
Insurance for damage to the rental car itself: it covers the damage minus the excess.
Can I reduce the deposit?
Often yes, by buying insurance with a lower excess. The terms depend on the company.
Does the insurance work abroad?
Only for an agreed trip with a green card. Without the company's permission the insurance may not apply.
