Taking a rental car abroad
Trips to Montenegro, Bosnia and other countries are possible, but almost always need permission arranged in advance.
Is permission needed
Leaving the country almost always needs the rental company's consent and a separate document (the green card insurance). Crossing the border without permission breaks the contract: the insurance may not apply, and the company may charge a penalty.
Where you can usually go
Most often Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina and North Macedonia are allowed; some companies also allow Bulgaria, Romania, Croatia, Hungary and Greece. The list depends on the company and the car class. Each vehicle page shows a “Cross-border” label.
Where you usually cannot go
Kosovo is, as a rule, not allowed for cars rented in Serbia. Some companies do not allow expensive cars and motorcycles to leave the country, and some restrict other destinations by their own rules.
Cost and processing time
It is usually a separate fee per rental, and processing takes from one to several working days, so ask for permission when you book. List the countries of your route in the request: we pass them on to the rental company and come back with exact terms.
At the border
Take your passport, licence, rental contract, vehicle documents and the green card. Entry rules for citizens of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan and other countries change, so check them before you go on the foreign ministry websites of the countries on your route.
Pick a car
Choose the city and dates: the price has no hidden fees. The contract is signed directly with the rental company.
